Spike Lee and Geraldo: Why is a good apology so hard to find?

The number of reported public apologies has skyrocketed recently, yet the quality of those apologies is plummeting. The trend appears to have captured Spike Lee and Geraldo Rivera.

Public?apologies are so common these days that?multiple websites have sprung up just to keep track of who is asking forgiveness of whom. Effectiveapologies.com, for instance, has a running ?apology of the week,? and the just-launched terribleapologies.tumblr.com?ranks the worst of them.

This week alone, Geraldo Rivera and Spike Lee are in the apology corner being assessed, evaluated, and rated on the details of their infraction and the effectiveness?and sincerity of their public efforts to make amends.

This?critical scrutiny of public manners leads to?some obvious?questions about why we are seeing such an extended effort to recover after making a highly visible faux pas: Why does it seem so hard to?apologize these days ? have we all forgotten simple?early lessons about how to say ?sorry??

?We are in a pandemic of bad behavior,? says Dr. Aaron Lazare, chancellor and dean?emeritus of the University?of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and author of the 2004 book, ?On Apology.??

He has?studied the frequency of?apologies in published news reports from 1900 to the present day and says since the 1980s, ?the number of apologies has tripled.??But, he adds, the effectiveness and sincerity of those apologies has?plummeted.

?Most of these people simply want to have their cake and eat it too,? he says, noting that the key to a genuine apology is humility and restoration of dignity for the offended party.

?What we?re seeing now is most of these apologies are simply efforts at self-justification and an attempt to show how brilliant they really are, rather than any thought about the victim,? who more often than not, ends up being blamed,?he adds.

Mr. Rivera has spent the past?week fending off?criticism of his efforts to apologize for his comments?that the Florida teenager Trayvon Martin might not have been shot had he not been wearing a hoodie.

Spike Lee, meanwhile, has been knocked for merely tweeting his apologies to a?Florida couple whose address he mistakenly passed along as being the home of the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed?the Florida teen.

The 24/7 media culture is partly responsible for the explosion of apologies, says Ari Kohen, an associate professor of political science at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

A hyper-connected online culture means more and more opportunities to say or do something offensive, he notes. This also means that ?more and more people are watching, listening, and most importantly ?sharing? the offensive thing that someone has said or done,? he says via e-mail, adding, ?so we're seeing the offensive statement or action more than perhaps we would have, which yields more calls for apology, which in turn yields more and more terrible apologies.?

Professor Kohen and a student?launched the terribleapologies blog two days ago in response to?Rivera?s apology quagmire, with the intent of studying just how bad an apology can be, he says.

?It?s tempting to think that these bad apologies don't matter for the people who make them,? he says, citing both Rivera and conservative radio show host Rush Limbaugh, who?issued what many dubbed a non-apology?after calling a Georgetown University law student a ?slut? and a ?prostitute.??

?That must be what Rush Limbaugh and Geraldo Rivera are hoping ? but I think that the public won't be so fast to forget. Indeed, with social networking, my sense is that a bad public apology can hang around for a really long time and can have fairly serious adverse effects (like the campaign targeting Limbaugh's sponsors, for example). Indeed, there's more interest in bad apologies right now than I might have thought,? he says.

The polarization of public life has made it harder than ever to find the space for real repentance, reform or?forgiveness, says Conservative Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, who is running for Congress in New Jersey.

?I?ve long thought Elton John had it right when he said sorry is the hardest word,? he says, but a growing culture of meanness is making it harder. ?Someone makes a mistake and we carve them up with knives,? he says, adding, ?Do we really want to live in a world where?people can make one mistake and that?s it??

Jerry Lee Lewis weds for 7th time in Mississippi

NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) ? Jerry Lee Lewis has wed for the seventh time in a ceremony this month in Mississippi, according to a newspaper report.

The Natchez Democrat (http://bit.ly/HxLYLa ) reports that Lewis, nicknamed "The Killer," married Judith Brown on March 9. She has been the 76-year-old country and early rock music legend's caregiver. She also formerly was married to Lewis' cousin, Rusty. Rusty's older sister, Myra Gale Brown, married Lewis in 1957 when she was 13 and was his third wife. The marriage caused shockwaves for Lewis' career.

Lewis' last marriage ended in 2004 when he divorced Kerrie McCarver after 20 years together.

The newspaper reports the 62-year-old Brown and Lewis married at a private home in Natchez, Miss., and have spent the past three weeks touring Mississippi and Louisiana.

Brown told the Democrat she became Lewis' caregiver about two years ago.

Earlier today ThinkProgress?reported?that the House Ways and Means Committee is expected to approve a proposal by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) that is misleadingly entitled the Small Business Tax Cut Act.

People who have read the bill and not just its title, however, have noted that it is?extremely poorly targeted?at small businesses. It is, in fact, just another tax cut for rich people. Among the biggest beneficiaries would be the owners of extremely profitable businesses like?Oprah Winfrey?s production company?and?professional sports teams?like theSuper Bowl champion New York Giants, as well as highly paid professionals like lawyers, lobbyists, doctors, and consultants.

The Tax Policy Center has now estimated who benefits from Cantor?s bill. Among TPC?sfindings:

??The top 1 percent would receive an average tax cut that is 1000 times bigger than the average tax cut for people in the middle quintile?($23 vs. $23,000). The top 0.1 percent would receive an average tax cut of more than $130,000.

??Half of the tax benefits would go to millionaires, who comprise less than one-half of one percent of all taxpayers and?only 4 percent?of actual small business owners according to a recent Treasury study. Millionaires, on average, would get a tax cut of $45,000 ? almost as much as median household income in 2010.

??Business owners with annual income of $200,000 or less ? who comprise more than 75 percent of small business owners ? would receive only 16 percent of the benefit from Cantor?s bill.

French nuclear physicist on terror trial

PARIS (AP) ? A former nuclear physicist went on trial in Paris on Thursday on accusations of plotting attacks with the North African wing of Al-Qaida. But his defenders say he only sent some angry emails and fear he may be unfairly linked with a gunman who recently sowed terror in southern France.

Adlene Hicheur, who used to work at Europe's most prestigious particle accelerator, has been in prison for two and a half years awaiting trial. Now that the trial has started, his allies worry the timing couldn't be worse: it comes days after France's biggest terror attacks in years.

Earlier this month, in an apparently unrelated case, police say another young man of Algerian descent, Mohamed Merah, killed three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers in the cities of Toulouse and Montauban and claimed ties to al-Qaida. Merah, 23, was later killed in a shootout with police.

The rampage has shaken the French national psyche, and left Hicheur's lawyers eager to differentiate the two cases.

"I think that there should be no confusion between Mohamed Merah and Adlene Hicheur," said Hicheur's attorney Patrick Baudouin, who described Merah as a "crazy, dangerous criminal," with an arsenal of weapons and who said he received arms training in Pakistan.

"For Adlene Hicheur, there is nothing like that. He has a family, friends, working colleagues, a stable entourage. He has never been in Afghanistan nor in any other such country," he said.

Hicheur, 35, never took a single step toward carrying out a terrorist act, his defenders say. Rather, the accusations against him are based on "some comments via the Internet with somebody he absolutely didn't know, some comments which admittedly are criticizable, which admittedly can seem worrying to some extent, but which were comments that didn't go any further and remained just words," Baudouin said.

Hicheur's brother Halim lamented that after the killings in and around Toulouse in recent weeks, "Some people wanted to raise the specter of the terrorism threat by the Algerian, Muslim nuclear physicist, etc. All the key words you can name."

The Merah case has stirred up such a national fervor that re-election-minded President Nicolas Sarkozy has floated a proposal to make it a crime to repeatedly visit jihadist websites ? in part because French counterrorism officials fear "lone wolf" attacks by militants who self-radicalize online.

And Hicheur's case is all about the Internet.

While laid up with a herniated disk in 2009, Hicheur railed in various e-mails about the need to punish Western governments for the allegedly anti-Muslim wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an order sending the case to trial.

Once a nuclear physicist at Switzerland's celebrated CERN laboratory, he stands accused of conferring with an alleged al-Qaida contact about possible assassination or bombing plots. But his defenders say it was all talk, no action. Hicheur faces charges of "criminal association with a view to plotting terrorist attacks."

His advocates allege the Algerian-born scientist fits French authorities' "profile" for the homegrown terrorist they most worry about: Muslim, young, angry at the West, well-educated, Internet-savvy, and self-radicalized.

Hicheur is very well-educated, integrated into French society and never took any steps to gather weapons, his supporters say. But the threat that he posed seemed even more potent because of his access to a potential security hazard ? the CERN lab. He had no police record.

Merah, by contrast, struggled in school, ran with an ultraconservative Muslim crowd, and amassed a small arsenal. He claimed he stole to drum up money to buy weapons.

Hicheur was arrested in a pre-dawn raid on Oct. 8, 2009, at his parents' home in southeastern France, hours before he was to take a flight to Algeria to work on a real estate purchase, Baudouin said.

Baudouin said French investigators pored over about 35 emails between Hicheur and an alleged contact with Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb. Some cited possible targets, including a French military barracks in the Alps.

Investigators say Hicheur, under police questioning, admitted that he believed a contact he had in the email correspondence ? a man in Algeria named Mustapha Debchi ? was part of AQIM. A police search of Hicheur's computer also turned up a file folder titled "tempo AQMI" ? for the group's French language acronym.

Debchi allegedly sought to persuade Hicheur to carry out a suicide bombing ? which he refused, responding that it was against Islam, and that he had no intention of dying prematurely, the court documents showed.

CERN adheres to the principle of innocence until guilt is proven and looks forward to Hicheur receiving a fair trail, research facility spokesman James Gillies said Wednesday.

Hicheur was on contract with CERN from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. A postdoctoral researcher, his contract with CERN expired at the end of March 2010, a few months after his arrest, according to institute spokesman Michael David Mitchell.

Hicheur is the only person to face trial in the case.

"I hope today that we'll have a trial that separates the context of the killings in Toulouse and Montauban, (and) that the case of Adlene Hicheur is judged individually," Hicheur's lawyer Baudouin said. "Hicheur mustn't be a scapegoat for a case he has nothing to do with."

'Bacterial shock' to recapture essential phosphate

Bacteria could be exploited to recapture dwindling phosphate reserves from wastewater according to research presented at the Society for General Microbiology's Spring Conference in Dublin this week.

Phosphorus in the form of phosphate - is essential for all living things as a component of DNA and RNA and its role in cellular metabolism. Around 38 million tonnes of phosphorus are extracted each year from rock. Most of this extracted phosphorus goes into the production of fertilizers to replace the phosphates that plants remove from the soil. However, it is a scare natural resource and current estimates suggest that reserves of phosphate rock may only last for the next 45-100 years.

Researchers at Queen's University Belfast (QUB) are developing a novel biological process to remove extracted phosphate from wastewater where it ultimately ends up after manufacturing. Dr John McGrath who is leading the project explained, "Phosphate in wastewater is a pollutant that causes increased growth of algae and plants, reducing the oxygen available for aquatic organisms. This is known as eutrophication and poses the single biggest threat to water quality in Northern Ireland and indeed globally."

The work at QUB has focused on microorganisms that capture and store phosphate from wastewater, and how this process varies under different nutritional and environmental conditions. "A variety of microbes in wastewater accumulate phosphorus inside their cells and store it as a biopolymer known as polyphosphate. In some cases, this can represent up to 20% of the dry weight of the microorganism!" explained Dr McGrath. "If we can harness this process we have a feasible biotechnological route to remove and recycle phosphate from wastewater."

The team have recently discovered a physiological 'shock' treatment which significantly increases microbial uptake of phosphorus and its accumulation inside cells. "It's similar to jumping into the sea on a winter's day the first thing you do is take a sharp intake of breath. When we shock the microorganisms, their response is to take in phosphorus," explained Dr McGrath. "We've demonstrated this using activated sludge, containing a variety of microbes, from wastewater treatment works and shown this shock treatment is effective at producing a phosphorus-rich biomass suitable for phosphorus recycling."

Dr McGrath believes that developing such biotechnological processes is essential for regenerating valuable mineral resources. "No alternative to phosphorus exists we urgently need to find ways of recovering and recycling phosphates. It's a pollutant we can't live without." he said. "Phosphates are currently removed from wastewater by chemical methods, however this is expensive and results in the production of large volumes of sludge. In contrast, the process we are developing is sustainable and efficient."
