European leaders' breakthrough defied expectations

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Europe's leaders finally rose to the challenge of a debt crisis that has hobbled economic growth and threatened the global financial system.

Markets roared their approval Friday after leaders of the 27 European Union countries backed bold ideas to help weak countries cope with rising debt levels and frail banks.

For the first time in 19 summits since the start of the crisis, the EU leaders defied low expectations by announcing plans to:

? Bail out banks, without putting any financial burden on strapped governments.

? Ease borrowing costs on Italy and Spain, the euro region's third- and fourth-largest economies.

? Seek stronger, centralized regulation to European banks.

? Rescue floundering countries, without forcing them to make painful budget cuts if they've already made economic reforms.

?Tie their budgets, currency and governments more tightly.

Europe's leaders trumpeted the agreement. The prime minister of Ireland ? one of the five euro countries that has required emergency funds ? said the plans marked a "seismic shift in European policy." British Prime Minister David Cameron said that "for the first time in some time we have actually seen steps ... to get ahead of the game."

There was a sign immediately that Europe's latest plan was easing fear in financial markets: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow money on the bond market fell dramatically. The interest rate, or yield, on the country's 10-year bonds fell by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average recorded one of its biggest gains of the year, and stocks advanced even further in Europe ? in strong and weak countries alike. The benchmark stock index in Germany rose 4.3 percent, by far its best performance this year. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, and a warm reaction there was a crucial sign of approval for the plan. Prices for oil and other commodities shot higher.

The decisions made at the European Union summit in Brussels won't end the crisis that has gripped Europe for nearly three years. Plenty of questions remain about how the bank bailouts would work, whether there's enough money committed to rescue banks and governments and whether impoverished, indebted Greece will be forced out of the euro club.

But for EU leaders who have consistently underwhelmed their exasperated publics and nervous financial markets, Friday's plans marked a breakthrough.

At first it looked like the summit would produce little more than a modest plan to stimulate growth in Europe. But Italy and Spain, whose borrowing costs have soared to dangerous levels, refused to sign off on a $150 billion spending plan unless something was done to ease their financial burdens.

So the leaders signaled a willingness to expand the use of Europe's two rescue funds. The money could be used to buy bonds to drive down a country's borrowing costs. Or it could be loaned directly to troubled banks, which would EU leaders said would help break "the vicious cycle" in which weak banks and weak governments threaten to drag each other down.

Before the summit, European leaders insisted that bailout funds be used only to rescue governments ? like Ireland, Portugal and Greece. If money was going to be used for banks, it had to first go to a government, which then funneled it to the troubled banks. But that added to the debt on a government's books because it was responsible for repaying the money.

So efforts to help the banks ended up raising fears about governments. That is why Spain's borrowing costs rose dramatically after the eurozone countries agreed to lend it $125 billion to rescue its banks.

The EU plans also call for a single regulator ? probably the European Central Bank ? to oversee Europe's banks. Currently, banks are regulated by their national governments such as Spain's, which have been slow to recognize loan problems and shut down the worst banks.

As part of a broad "banking union" the new regulator will likely get power to close failing banks if their national regulators won't do it. The plan is also expected to include deposit insurance across Europe. Individual European countries now insure bank deposits within their borders. But bank failures could overwhelm those national funds.

The bank overhaul is supposed to be completed by the end of the year.

The leaders said they were committed to linking their countries closer together economically and politically. But they put off the hard work of closer integration, which is likely to require countries to give up some of their taxing and spending powers to a European budget authority.

Most analysts cheered the EU plans but worried about the questions left unanswered. And they said the bailout funds are too small to handle the tasks that could be thrown at them.

Europe's two bailout funds have a combined $625 billion in lending power; up to $125 billion of that is already committed to helping Spain bail out its banks. The remaining $500 billion looks small compared to $3.1 trillion in Spanish and Italian bonds outstanding.

The solution hovering in the background, say some economists, is the European Central Bank. The ECB could buy any necessary amount of government bonds, backed if need be by the bank's theoretically limitless power to create new money. So far the bank has been unwilling to take this step, which could risk running afoul of its mandate to fight inflation and a ban on central bank financing governments. The ECB's next policy meeting is Thursday in Frankfurt.

The summit deal leaves out crucial details of just how any bank bailouts would work. Would bank creditors have to take a loss on their investments, or would taxpayers foot the whole bill? The deal didn't specify.

If the banking regulator and a rescue fund take ownership stakes in failed banks, manage those stakes in the taxpayer interest while forcing losses on shareholders and creditors, it could be positive, said Clemens Fuest, an expert in public finance at Oxford University's Said Business School.

Otherwise, simply charging taxpayers could be "a huge burden on growth in Europe for a very long time," Clemens said.

I started thinking more about how all of us grew up and the types of foods we were all exposed to. ?For my southern patients, I have heard that fried foods were abundant. ?For my Italian patients, I am told that pasta dishes were the most prominent. ?Pretty much every ethnic/regional group will have food (or drink) sources indigenous to that area or culture. ?To some extent, these ?roots? carry through to our adult years regardless of where we relocate to. ?And when we do go back ?home?, we will often revert back to the old homegrown eating habits, and strongly encouraged by our family members and/or friends that still live there. ?During your weight loss journey, try to be cognizant of these ?roots? issues and identify the foods that need to be avoided or minimized. ?(By the way, the ?slice? tasted great).

Developments in British phone-hacking scandal

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that on Thursday, News Corp. is expected to announce that the board of directors has approved a plan to split the global media conglomerate into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and another its entertainment operations.

News Corp. had said Tuesday that it was considering such a move. It comes as Britain's communications regulator enters the final stages of its review of whether BSkyB is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license amid a phone-hacking scandal involving British newspaper owned by News Corp.

News Corp., which is controlled by Rupert Murdoch, had no comment on the Journal report. The Journal is News Corp.'s flagship newspaper.

Here are key developments in that scandal:

November 2005: News of the World royal reporter Clive Goodman writes story saying Prince William has a knee injury. Buckingham Palace complaint prompts police inquiry.

August 2006: Goodman arrested along with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire for suspected hacking into voicemails of royal officials.

January 2007: Goodman jailed for four months; Mulcaire given six-month sentence. News of the World editor Andy Coulson resigns but insists he had not known about the hacking.

May 2007: Conservative Party leader David Cameron taps Coulson to be his media adviser.

July 2009: Coulson tells parliamentary committee he never "condoned use of phone hacking."

September 2009: Rebekah Brooks, former editor of the News of the World and its sister paper The Sun, named chief executive of News International, News Corp.'s British arm.

February 2010: Parliamentary committee finds no evidence that Coulson knew about phone hacking but states it's "inconceivable" that no one apart from royal correspondent Goodman knew about it.

May 2010: Cameron becomes prime minister; Coulson named communications chief.

Jan. 14, 2011: British police reopen investigation into phone-hacking charges against News of the World.

Jan. 21: Coulson resigns from Cameron's office amid claims he had sanctioned phone hacking. Coulson continues to deny any wrongdoing or any knowledge of hacking.

April 5: Police arrest two journalists, including Ian Edmondson, the tabloid's former news editor, on suspicion of intercepting voicemails. More than a dozen arrests of journalists and some police would follow in the coming months as inquiries into phone hacking and police corruption continued.

April 8: News of the World admits it was responsible for phone hacking and says it will set up a compensation plan to deal with claims fairly and efficiently. It was the newspaper's first admission of liability.

April 15: Judge allows actress Sienna Miller and three others to proceed with lawsuits over phone hacking against the newspaper despite an ongoing criminal investigation.

May 13: Miller's lawyer says lawsuit settled for 100,000 pounds (about $165,000 at the time). Since then, News International has reached settlements with several others to avoid trials.

June 30: British regulators give News Corp. tentative approval to take full control of satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting.

July 4: The Guardian newspaper reports that News of the World journalists hacked into voicemails left for murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, and gave her parents and police false hope she was alive by deleting messages when the mailbox became full.

July 6: Cameron demands inquiries after the Guardian report.

July 7: News International shuts down the best-selling News of the World tabloid.

July 8: Coulson and two other men are arrested in the widening police inquiry.

July 10: News of the World publishes its last edition after 168 years.

July 11: News Corp. withdraws offer to spin off Sky News in attempt to save bid for complete control of satellite broadcaster BSkyB. British media report that two other News Corp. newspapers in Britain engaged in hacking, deception and privacy violations that included accessing former Prime Minister Gordon Brown's bank account information and stealing the medical records of his seriously ill baby son.

July 13: News Corp. pulls its bid to take full control of BSkyB.

July 14: Murdoch agrees to appear before a parliamentary committee, defends News Corp.'s handling of scandal. Reports emerge that FBI opens inquiry into possible phone hacking of 9/11 terror victims.

July 15: Resignations of Rebekah Brooks, the chief of News Corp.'s British operations, and Les Hinton, publisher of The Wall Street Journal's publisher and one of Murdoch's staunchest allies. Hinton was chairman of News International during some of the time phone hacking took place. Murdoch meets with Milly Dowler's family to apologize.

July 16: News Corp. runs a full-page ad in seven British newspapers apologizing for "serious wrongdoing" at the News of the World.

July 17: Brooks is arrested by U.K. police in the hacking scandal. London police chief Paul Stephenson resigns amid criticism over his alleged links to Neil Wallis, a former News of the World executive editor arrested in the scandal. Murdoch publishes another ad in British newspapers titled "Putting right what's gone wrong."

July 18: London police assistant commissioner John Yates resigns. He made the decision two years earlier not reopen police inquiry into phone hacking ? a decision he said he would have made differently with the benefit of hindsight.

July 19: Rupert Murdoch appears at a parliamentary hearing alongside his son James and says he was humbled and ashamed, but accepted no responsibility for wrongdoing. James Murdoch, executive chairman of the British newspaper unit, apologizes for the scandal. He tells British lawmakers that "these actions do not live up to the standards our company aspires to," but he denies he knew hacking was widespread at News of the World.

July 21: James Murdoch's former legal adviser and a former editor contest his testimony to British lawmakers.

Aug. 16: British lawmakers release written testimony in which lawyers and former executives cast additional doubt on the denials made by Coulson and by Rupert and James Murdoch. Former Murdoch lieutenants accuse the pair of misrepresentations and exaggerations.

Aug. 24: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder calls a report of possible phone hacking targeting 9/11 victims and their families very disturbing and says the department is pursuing a preliminary criminal investigation of the matter.

Sept. 2: Long-time independent board member Thomas Perkins announces he is leaving News Corp.'s board of directors, but he cites his upcoming 80th birthday and not the scandal.

Sept. 6: Four former News International executives challenge statements made to Parliament by Rupert and James Murdoch. One says Rupert Murdoch wrongly blamed outside lawyers for improperly investigating his company's phone hacking scandal.

Oct. 21: Rupert Murdoch faces disgruntled investors at the company's annual shareholders meeting. He defends his handling of the scandal and deflects any notion that he plans to step down soon.

Oct. 24: News Corp. discloses that more than a third of the ballots cast oppose the re-election of Rupert Murdoch's sons James and Lachlan to the company's board of directors.

Nov. 1: Documents show a legal adviser to the company's newspapers warned three years earlier that there was overwhelming evidence that several senior journalists at the News of the World were using illegal methods. The documents bolster claims that high-ranking executives were aware that phone hacking was more widespread than they let on.

Nov. 10: James Murdoch returns to Parliament. He insists he hadn't been told of widespread phone hacking and blames two of his senior lieutenants for failing to warn him of a culture of criminality.

Nov. 14: Opening of a media-ethics inquiry set up by Britain's prime minister. The two-part inquiry was tasked with investigating the role of the press and police in the phone-hacking scandal.

Nov. 24: Miller, the actress, tells the media-ethics inquiry that she was left paranoid and scared by years of relentless tabloid pursuit that ranged from paparazzi outside her house to the hacking of her mobile phone.

Nov. 29 James Murdoch re-elected chairman of BSkyB.

Jan. 9, 2012: News Corp. names Gerson Zweifach as its group general counsel, replacing Janet Nova, who had been serving in an interim basis for the past six months.

Jan. 19: It's revealed that News International agreed to cash payouts to 37 people, including movie star Jude Law, who were harassed and phone-hacked by his tabloid press. Financial details of 15 of the payouts, totaling more than 640,000 pounds (about $1 million), are made public at a court hearing.

Jan 27: GlaxoSmithKline says that James Murdoch has decided not to seek re-election to the drug company's board so he could focus on his duties at News Corp.

Feb. 2: Lex Fenwick, a Bloomberg LP executive, is named Hinton's replacement as CEO of Dow Jones & Co., the News Corp. subsidiary that publishes The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires.

Feb. 8: News Corp. says net income grew by nearly two-thirds in the final three months of 2011, despite expenses related to ongoing phone hacking investigations of its U.K. newspaper unit.

April 12: The U.K.'s police watchdog says senior members of Scotland Yard showed poor judgment in their handling of the scandal. It says senior officers in the London police force broke the rules when they hired Wallis, a former tabloid executive, to help run public relations and helped Wallis's daughter get a job.

April 20: A lawyer for victims tells a court that nearly 50 new phone hacking lawsuits have been filed against News International, sending the total to more than 100.

April 23: The U.K. broadcast regulator says it's investigating email hacking at Sky News.

April 24: James Murdoch appears before a U.K. inquiry, defends his record and accuses subordinates of preventing him from making a clean sweep at News of the World.

April 25: Rupert Murdoch tells the inquiry that his globe-spanning TV and newspaper empire doesn't carry as much political sway as is often believed. May 1: A committee of British lawmakers calls Rupert Murdoch unfit to run his global media empire.

May 2: BSkyB defends itself as a "fit and proper" company amid a regulatory review. Its CEO points out that BSkyB and News Corp. are separate companies. News Corp. controls BSkyB with a 39 percent stake. Meanwhile, News Corp.'s board of directors announces it has "full confidence in Rupert Murdoch's fitness."

May 8: Two judges rule that Coulson can continue a court battle to force News International to pay his legal fees.

May 10: Coulson appears at the media ethics inquiry and denies that he got the job to boost Cameron's clout with Rupert Murdoch's powerful media empire.

May 11: Brooks testifies and reveals that Cameron commiserated with her after she quit. In six hours of questioning, Brooks listed Christmas parties, private dinners and hotel lunches she shared with the country's most powerful political leaders. She also acknowledged that she used her access to lobby the British government over the BSkyB takeover deal.

May 15: Brooks, her husband and four others are charged over alleged attempts to conceal evidence of Britain's tabloid phone hacking scandal. The criminal charges are the first to be filed since police launched a new inquiry into phone hacking in January 2011.

May 30: Coulson is arrested and charged with perjury in the trial of a flamboyant ex-Scottish lawmaker.

June 1: A lawyer for News Corp.'s British newspaper group says the company could face 500 lawsuits from victims of phone hacking ? far more than have so far been filed.

June 11: Brown, the former British prime minister, accuses a Murdoch-owned tabloid of personally attacking him, failing the British people and undermining the war in Afghanistan through its coverage of the conflict. The remarks come at Britain's media ethics inquiry.

June 12: Former British Prime Minister John Major testifies that Murdoch tried to influence his government's dealings with the European Union, even hinting that the politician could lose the support of Murdoch's newspapers if he didn't change direction.

June 14: Cameron defends his ill-fated decision to make Coulson his communications director. Cameron says he had received assurances that Coulson was not involved in the phone hacking ? but those proved hollow when Coulson was forced to resign last year in the scandal.

June 18: News Corp. says former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Joel Klein is relinquishing his role as head of the company's internal probe into phone hacking. He surrenders the duties to Gerson Zweifach, a company lawyer. News Corp. said the move allows Klein to return to his full-time job running its education division.

June 22: Brooks is granted bail until Sept. 26 as she awaits trial on charges of attempting to cover up evidence.

Tuesday: News Corp. says it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies. The move comes as Britain's communications regulator enters the final stages of its review of whether BSkyB is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license.

Wednesday: The Wall Street Journal, which is News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reports that the company's board of directors has approved a plan that calls for splitting the global media conglomerate into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and another its entertainment operations.

Google TV website gets refreshed ahead of Google I/O

We're pretty sure that Google TV is going to feature quite prominently at Google I/O -- just in case you forgot, we'll be there all week! -- and to go along with that, the Google TV website got all refreshed. It falls into Google's general way of designing their web pages these days. It looks clean, simple, and fresh. It also gives a good breakdown of the devices available, both "buddy box" and integrated devices. There's also a decent guide to what Google TV actually is, and the applications that you can enjoy.

At the end of the day, it's just a website. But, for us, now lucky Brits -- and indeed several of our international cousins -- at least, Google TV is new and exciting. Being able to watch Eastenders and browse the web at the same time? Sounds good.

Oh, care for a dose of speculation? Well, when you're taking a look around the devices section of the site, a little feller in an I/O 12 t-shirt pops up behind a newly announced, Vizio Google TV box. Probably means we'll be seeing quite a bit of this little guy over the next few days as well.

How the CCNA Certification Relates to IPv6 | Academy of Computer ...

Before taking the Cisco Certified Network Associate exam, or CCNA, it is absolutely essential to understand both the ?why? and the ?how? of the new and emerging IPv6 technology. This is a crucial part of the exam and, as the future of the internet in generally, it?s pretty important to understand how it works. Before that, though, it?s even more important to understand why there is even a need for IPv6 technologies, as well as how they?re be implemented in a world that has largely been completely constructed based on the IPv4 specification.

Looking at the Origins of the IPv4 Specification

Even though the actual use of IPv6 in real world applications is relatively new, its roots begin more than two decades ago in 1990. That was the first year when tech experts began to predict that IPv4 address space would actually run out do the explosive growth of connected devices. Even in a world that couldn?t foresee the coming smartphone and tablet revolution that enabled ?everything everywhere? connectivity, this was a real concern.

In 1992, IPv4 classes A, B, and C, were joined by CIDR, or Classless Internet Domain Routing. This technology was essentially developed to promote greater efficiency within IPv4 environments, allowing blocks to be assigned more slowly and preventing the IP catastrophe that many analysts were predicting at the time. While this was a great way to ?kick the can down the road,? it was not a permanent solution.

Steps toward a more lasting solution began in 1993, when the Internet Engineering Task Force recognized the need for an entirely new protocol that would highly scalable in a world full of connected devices. In response, the IETF created the IP Next Generation Group to study, analyze, and plan the deployment of a new IP protocol that would last far longer than the aging IPv4. The group became known as IPng, and it got to work pretty quickly. By 1994, the group?s work was being approved and standardized by a number of internet standards committees, and it was officially given the IPv6 designation later that year.

Test implementations followed fork the next half-decade and, in 1999, regional internet registries assigned the first block of IPv6 addresses for non-experimental uses. This followed the releasing of patches and operating system updates to enable the parsing and processing of IPv6 address blocks just a few years earlier, and the technology was officially on its way.

Examining the Need for a New IP Address Specification

It was more than 20 years ago that experts first predicted that IPv4 address blocks would run out. The assignment of these addresses, and the relative lack of new ones to assign, has increased exponentially in the last decade alone. In 2002, a full 28 percent of IPv4 address blocks were still available for use around the world. By the present decade, that number had dropped by nearly two-thirds to just 10 percent. Without the development of the IPv6 specification, the future of the internet would currently be experiencing a real threat to its continued viability and use.

The IPv4 specification is a 32-bit construction, which allows for a grand total of 4,294,967,296 address blocks before the system simply runs out of options and capacity. Comparatively, IPv6 specification employes a 128-bit structure which permits for a vastly larger sea of potential address blocks. Indeed, the total number of IPv6 address blocks available for allocation around the world is 3.4 x1038, which experts believe can last anywhere from a few decades up to a half-century before a more advanced standard needs to once again be developed due to rising demand and a dearth of available blocks.

The IPv6 specification is also far more engaged with advanced hierarchies that make internet routing more efficient. This is seen as one of the main problems with IPv4, especially given the exponential growth of the internet and connected devices over the past two decades. The technology is not only much more vast and available, but actually faster at doing the exact same tasks that the IPv4 table is currently charged with handling.

A Commitment to Global Fairness with IPv6 Technologies

One of the interesting things about IPv4 is that the technology was actually split among several global governing bodies that served specific regions of the planet. Each governing authority managed the granting and distribution of IPv4 blocks to every country within its purview, and the structure still being used looks like this:

- ARIN, for North America, the Caribbean, and some North Atlantic locations
- AfriNIC, serving the African continent and Indian Ocean island nations
- APNIC, for the Asia-Pacific region and Oceania
- LACNIC, for South America and non-ARIN parts of the Caribbean
- RIPE NCC, for Europe and the Middle East

Despite these five organizations and their relatively equal holdings around the world, the ARIN organization is responsible for granting a full 74 percent of the IPv4 address blocks currently in use. That?s an astounding disparity between the regions, and it?s something that IPv6 has aimed to fix with the way it is deployed. Unlike IPv4, the technology has a single and global granting body, as well as a global prefix structure, that is designed to promote greater fairness in the assignment of addresses.

Where is IPv6 Now, and Where Will it Go in the Future?

Presently, much of the world is still stuck on the IPv4 standard as governments and internet service providers slowly migrate to the newer standard. While much of China and Korea are both running on the IPv6 standard for both traditional and mobile internet devices, the United States has lagged behind in implementation. The federal government announced a goal to be compatible with the technology by 2008, and has largely met that standard; the wireless provider T-Mobile has deployed IPv6 to its mobile networks; but other than these two major developments, the United States still relies heavily on IPv4. This partially makes sense, however, given that the continent is responsible for 74 percent of the specification?s allocation around the world.

Looking to the future, IPv6 adoption will increase because it has to. While it is currently ?dual stacked? with IPv4 address blocks, that will change as IPv4 addresses simply run out and people around the world are forced to migrate to the newer standard. Given the fast rate of IPv4 address disbursement, this is likely to happen within the present decade.

Music was booming in America well before Edison's 1877 invention of the phonograph transformed it into a utility as ubiquitous as electricity and flush toilets, which took about 50 years. By 1900 there were symphony orchestras in Pittsburgh and St. Louis, opera houses in Newberry, South Carolina, and Central City, Colorado, and added to these exceptional cases were countless theaters in which music of every kind was performed willy-nilly, often on the same bill. In 1870, American strivers bought 80 home pianos daily and filled their benches with sheet music; a decade later, local brass bands were epidemic as sales of cornets and trombones skyrocketed. Yet because 19th-century America produced no opera or symphony composers of note, all this action is still ignored by a defensively snobbish American musicological establishment.

Music scholar Daniel Cavicchi isn't a musicologist and doesn't think overmuch about composers. He teaches American studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, and traces his ethnographic approach to music scholarship to the Music in Daily Life Project overseen by the seminal popular music scholar Charles Keil at SUNY Buffalo. In 1993 Cavicchi, Keil, and Susan D. Crafts published My Music: 41 interviews with everyday fans that explode the fantasy of exclusive "taste subcultures" so dear to sociologists and marketers (and critics too) just by recounting musical preferences that cross more genre boundaries than experts consider appropriate. In 1998, he turned his Brown Ph.D. thesis into Tramps Like Us: Music & Meaning Among Springsteen Fans, dominated by summaries of and longish quotes from about 100 Bruce devotees that focus on feelings and experiences while barely touching the music itself ? even though Cavicchi's candid passion for that music helps ground and humanize the material.

As a critic, I have reservations about a method Cavicchi never suggests is the only way to address music. But as a democrat I welcome it. "My Music"
changed the way I think about fandom and established Cavicchi's right to write music history his way. The result is Listening and Longing: Music Lovers in the Age of Barnum, a detailed look at 19th-century music consumers that at a mere 192 pages stands as a painstaking, groundbreaking work of scholarship that adds substantially to our understanding of all that disrespected action. Cavicchi's approach propels him well beyond music proper. He believes that in the context of such "cultures of hearing" as oratory and hucksterism, "music lovers," as he likes to call them, were key players in the 19th century's fundamental identity-building project. As country boys tried their luck in the city and young middle-class women edged away from hearth and home, they developed their own ideas about pleasure, leisure, and class. Transformed inexorably into atomized cultural and economic actors, they struggled to make the most of it and enjoyed themselves along the way.

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) ? A reopened police investigation has concluded that actor Dylan McDermott's mother was killed in 1967 by her now-dead gangster boyfriend.

Waterbury police reopened the investigation last year into Diane McDermott's death after Dylan McDermott contacted them with questions, the Republican-American newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/KX4WBx ) Sunday and Monday as part of a two-part series.

He was 5 years old when his mother was shot in February 1967. Her death was originally ruled an accident.

Police told the newspaper that the evidence they found would be enough to file murder charges against John Sponza, who lived with McDermott at the time. He had told authorities that McDermott accidently shot herself after picking up a gun he had been cleaning.

Sponza, who police say had ties to organized crime, was shot to death in 1972, his body found in the trunk of a car in a Waltham, Mass., grocery store parking lot.

H. Wayne Carver, the state's medical examiner, reviewed McDermott's autopsy and determined that the gun found near the body was too small a caliber to have been the weapon used to kill her. The wound also showed that the murder weapon had been pressed to the back of her head, according to his report.

Police Superintendent Michael Gugliotti also stumbled over some of the initial findings.

"What troubled me was that there was very little follow up other than the statement Sponza had given to police," Gugliotti said.

"Sponza is telling the police that night that he very rarely, if ever, had arguments, yet everyone we spoke to, including Dylan, who was only 5 at the time, remembered very violent, vicious arguments," he added. "Dylan vividly recalls the amount of times, not only flashing the gun, but pointing it at the kid, saying, 'Shut up and get out of here.' He's still probably traumatized by that."

Dylan McDermott, who won a Golden Globe in 1999 for his role on the TV drama "The Practice," declined to comment to the newspaper about the investigation. His sister, Robin Herrera, said she is relieved that the truth has been discovered.

"I'm happy to know my mother wasn't mentally ill or depressed," she said. "Somebody took her from us; she didn't leave us."

Dylan McDermott met with Gugliotti and Mayor Neil M. O'Leary last year while in town for a fundraiser.

"He said in order for me to survive and to get where I am today, I needed to bury that moment in my life deep within myself," Gugliotti said. "He said it wasn't until recently that I've come to the point in my life where I'm able to begin to process all of this and make it part of his life."

Police said the McDermott investigation has led to evidence that also implicates Sponza in at least two other unsolved homicides.

Local sports digest: Stanford diver Kristian Ipsen secures Olympic spot

Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen is headed to his first Olympic Games after he and Troy Dumais won the 3-meter synchro on Friday with a three-round combined score of 1,296.21 at the U.S. Olympic trials in Federal Way, Wash.

The duo held on to its semifinal lead and defeated Chris Colwill and Drew Livingston, who scored 1,263.51. Stanford alum Dwight Dumais and his brother Justin finished third with a score of 1,151.46.

Rowing

Stanford alum Eleanor Logan and Cal graduate Erin Cafaro are heading back to the Olympics to defend their gold medal in women's rowing.

They were named to the women's eights boat that won a gold medal in Beijing.

U.S. Rowing announced the final assignments headed to London that included six rowers with Bay Area ties.
