Stewart Friesen wins 3rd straight at Utica-Rome

dVERNON ? Early in the 2012 season at the Utica-Rome Speedway, defending Modified track champion Stewart Friesen and the rest of the Tom Cullen Racing team were scratching their heads trying to find some extra speed as they struggled to place in the top five. Now they have the rest of the competition scratching their heads as Friesen raced off to his third consecutive win Thursday evening.

Other winners on special midweek show went included Steve Way in the Sportsman, Tom Denton in the Pro Stocks and Tim Janczuk in the Pure Stocks. Mirabito Fuel Group presented the nights action as part of the Fan Appreciation night.

Jason Rood and Casey Williams brought the Modified starting field to the green flag with Williams jumping to lead early. Williams set a quick pace early as he steadily pulled away from the field with Rood, Jimmy Davis, Ryan Phelps, and Larry Wight all battling for position behind him. Davis pressured his teammate Rood for the second in the first handful of circuits but then Phelps started to mount his charge as he slipped by Davis for third on lap seven and set off after Rood, who was still chasing Williams. Caution flags plagued the next several circuits, first as Davis slowed with front end issues on lap eight. The restart saw Rood gain the advantage over Williams bringing Phelps with Williams falling back to third. With 10 laps completed it was Rood atop the scoreboard followed by Phelps with Wight dropping Williams back another position to take third while Alan Johnson rounded out the top five.

Williams? fine run ended a circuit later as he spun in turn four to bring out the yellow and the restart saw another pause as several cars got together in turn four. When the field got going again, it was Phelps charging by Rood to take the lead. While Phelps was leading, 13th place starter Stewart Friesen was picking his way towards the front, first cracking the top five on lap 11 as he charged by Johnson and Wight to grab third while Phelps was fending off Rood.

By lap 16, Friesen had completed his pass on Rood to grab second and on the 17th circuit; he completed his charge to the front as he passed Phelps. With 20 laps in the books, Friesen was the leader over Phelps, Rood, Wight, and Pat Ward.

With Friesen comfortably showing the fast way around, Wight was coming alive as he got by Rood to grab third and went after Phelps. Lap 22 saw Wight complete the pass on Phelps to grab the runner up position with only Friesen in front of him. A caution flag after the completion of lap 22 brought the Friesen back to the rest of the field with Wight, Phelps, Ward and Matt Sheppard on his bumper but Friesen was up to the challenge as he sped away at the drop of the green. Friesen would run off to this third consecutive as Wight, Phelps, Sheppard and Ward trailed. Ronnie Johnson, Alan Johnson, Dale Planck, Mike Mahaney, and Rood filled out the top ten spots.

Friesen?s win gave him at guaranteed starting spot in Brett Deyo?s Short Track SuperNationals at the Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday October 6.

Jack Miller was the early leader in the 20-lap Sportsman main, leading the first five circuits until eighth place starter Steve Way completed the pass to take the lead on the sixth lap. Several caution flags would give Matt Janczuk, Chris Mackey and Claude Hutchings, Jr. chances to challenge for the win but Way was too strong as he held on for the win. Janczuk, Hutchings, AJ Filbeck and Mackey chased Way to the stripe.

The Pro Stocks saw Jim Money showing the quick way around in the early stage of their 20 lap feature event as he was able to lead the first seven laps. The star of this race though, was point leader Tom Denton as he started 18th after mechanical issues in his heat. Denton passed cars in wholesale fashion as he charged through the field. Lap six saw him go from the sixth spot to second with one more spot to go. Lap eight saw Denton blast by Money to take the lead and run off to his second consecutive win while Glenn Forward, Jeff Pastorella, Pete Stefanski and Jim Normoyle chased him to the checkered.

Pure Stock action would see defending champion Ron Hawker as the early leader in their 15 lap affair, but it was Tim Janczuk making a rare pass of Hawker on lap six that would decide the winner. Janczuk would hold off any challenges from Hawker to score his first career win in the Pure Stock ranks with Hawker, Chris Cunningham, Ricky Breed and Bill Mason chasing. Continued...

After just two days off, the Utica-Rome Speedway will be in action again Sunday as Rasmussen Rents and H&R Refuse presents Autograph night. A regular show of Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks is also planned. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. with racing starting at 6 p.m.
